Luciano Spalletti's side had the better of the opportunities in the Serie A clash, and the win - Inter's seventh in a row in all competitions - has seen them move above Lazio into third position in the table.

Inter were the better side for most of the match, completely dominating the first half, but the derby showdown appeared to be heading for a draw.

Gianluigi Donnarumma misjudged a brilliant right-wing Matias Vecino cross, leaving Icardi the simple task of nodding in his sixth goal in six games.

Inter had the ball in the back of the net after 12 minutes, with Icardi volleying home but the goal was chalked off for offside.

The referee's half-time whistle blew with the score goalless, but it was a first 45 minutes full of incident, and one where both teams had goals correctly disallowed. Although he tried to keep playing he had to be subbed off a few minutes later.

Milan had a super chance to take the lead 10 minutes from time when Suso found space inside the Inter box, but the Spaniard could not find a route past Samir Handanovic.

Milan had the ball the in the back of the net three minutes before the halftime break but Mateo Musacchio's header at the far post was flagged for offside.

Inter return after the global break with two huge games, tonight's clash with their arch rivals, and then a trip to Barcelona in the Champions League on Wednesday.
