The first new non-stop flight between Singapore and NY departed Changi International Airport on October 11 at 11:37pm (Singapore time) and arrived at Newark Liberty International Airport a day later, at 5:29am (US Eastern time).

The airline will also launch direct flights from Singapore to Los Angeles next month.

The flight unseated Qatar Airways from the current record for the world's longest flight, a 17-hour 40-minute marathon journey from Doha to Auckland.

When Singapore Airlines canceled the route five years ago, kerosene prices were above $120 a barrel; it announced plans to restart two years later, when the price had dropped by 50 percent.

Lightweight composites including carbon fiber make up the bulk of the A350-900ULR, while new wing tips help reduce drag, Airbus says.
