Ronaldo was the last player from outside of Spain to win the award when he was at Manchester United in 2008.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi and former Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo have won the Ballon d'Or for the last nine years while playing for Spanish clubs.

Belgium worldwide Hazard is considered to figure prominently on their wish list and, with the 27-year-old continuing to hint at a switch, Rivaldo believes it is only a matter of time before that deal is done.

"I don't think I'm going to win it", he said, according to the Daily Express.

"There are three or four players who have had elite years, you could say that Raphael Varane deserves it because he has won the two most important trophies, nobody else did", said Hazard.

"I could deserve it too, let's not lie". Sometimes in my head, I wake up in the morning and think I want to go.

"In my opinion, Modric deserves it. Hazard was excellent for Belgium at the World Cup and has started the new Premier League season very well", Rivaldo told Betfair.

"For that reason, Real Madrid should be considering his signing, especially given their recent poor form and Hazard's stated desire to play at the Bernabeu".

Real tried to sign Hazard during the summer, but had to back off when it became clear Chelsea would not sell both their star attacker and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to the La Liga side.

Hazard, 27, has made no secret of interest to play for the Los Blancos, but he confirmed this week that he wouldn't be going in January.

The Blancos saw a talismanic presence head for the exits over the summer, with a €100 million (£88m/$116m) deal taking a five-time Ballon d'Or victor to Juventus.
