#MeToo movement hits cricket: Malinga, Ranatunga named on social media

Now a woman alleges that a Sri Lankan cricketer once harassed her during one of the Indian Premier League (IPL) tournaments. In no position to leave the room, she was finally saved when the hotel staff came in to replenish the bar.

Ranatunga earlier had been accused of sexual misconduct by an Indian air hostess in the poolside of a hotel in India.

Former Sri Lanka skipper Arjuna Ranatunga might land in hot waters for allegedly sexually harassing an Indian flight attendant at a hotel in Mumbai.

Recently, Indian badminton player Jwala Gutta raked up past complaints of "mental harassment" and selection biases, saying that what she went through fell under the ambit of the ongoing #MeToo movement. In India, it started with Bollywood as actress Tanushree Dutta alleged that veteran actor Nana Patekar had attempted to abuse her and the #MeToo movement started to trend on social media. And they are, arguably, two legends of the game-Arjuna Ranatunga and Lasith Malinga.

"Ranatunga grabs me by waist, sliding his hands along the side of my breasts, I scream fearing the worst, kicking on his legs and feet". He has also been an integral part of the IPL, playing for Mumbai Indians, becoming the leading wicket-taker across all seasons of the tournament-154 wickets in 110 matches. "My discomfort growing inside of me, I urged her to get back to our room", the woman wrote in a Facebook post. A few years back when I was in Mumbai, I was looking for my friend in the hotel we were staying in. I ran into a very famous cricketer from Sri Lanka during the IPL season which stated that my friend was in his room, # 8221; the famous singer # 8217; s. Threatening him of dire consequences, passport cancellation, reporting it to the cops etc., for he is a Sri Lankan misbehaving with an Indian.

Ranatunga is yet to comment on her allegations. I quickly rushed to the bathroom, washed my face and left as soon as the hotel staff left. She further said that she was able to escape him and ran to the hotel reception but found none to help her.
