Ryan Coogler Returning to Write & Direct Black Panther Sequel

The Hollywood Reporter says the accomplished director has agreed to return to direct and write the sequel. In the acclaimed film, T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman) returns home to the hidden high-tech African nation of Wakanda to succeed to the throne and take his rightful place as king, following the death of his father.

Given the events of the Avengers: Infinity War ending and the heavily guarded secrets of Avengers 4, a new Black Panther movie presents an interesting challenge for Coogler, who is slated to begin writing the script next year.

"Black Panther" blew away box office records earlier this year, making $1.3 billion worldwide, including $700 million domestically - the biggest domestic box office gross for any Marvel film.

The report states that Coogler could tackle a version of the classic 12 Angry Men, which has been a theatrical staple and adapted for screen multiple times.

However, when it comes to potential Oscar glory, Disney have chose to back just one of these horses, and have put Black Panther forward for Best Picture consideration. The Disney and Fox merger should be complete long before Black Panther 2 starts coming together, so Coogler has a whole host of Marvel characters at his fingertips. Critics pundits anticipate a best picture nomination for the film. It is unknown if "Black Panther 2" will now become his primary focus if he will still tries to squeeze that smaller film in.

Coogler's return is exciting for me as a fan of the first film, but I was hoping that the filmmaker would move on to more intimate and personal projects now that he's gained so much capital in Hollywood.
