The best rap album category is expected to feature stiff competition since the genre has heavily dominated the pop charts in the past year, with albums by Drake, Eminem, XXXTentacion, Cardi B, Travis Scott, Lil Wayne, J. Cole and Migos being proposed as possible nominees.

Those "moving goalposts" seem all too real when one considers that last year's Best New Artist, Alessia Cara, released her first hit in 2015.

Cardi B and Post Malone are both ineligible to compete in the Best New Artist category at the next Grammy Awards, the New York Times reports. In Cardi's case, her ineligibility stems from the fact that she earned Grammy nominations in the past - she nabbed Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance nods for "Bodak Yellow" at the 2018 Grammys.

Post Malone, whose album Beerbongs and Bentleys will reportedly be nominated in the pop album category and not hip-hop/rap, is also reportedly not eligible for the category despite having a massively successful year of his own. According to the source, some felt that Malone had already past new artist status, due to the success of his 2016 debut album "Stoney" and his hit songs "Congratulations" and "White Iverson". She was also submitted for 2018 Best New Artist.

Essentially, a "new artist" is defined for the GRAMMY process as any performing artist or established performing group who releases, during the eligibility year, the recording that first establishes the public identity of that artist or established group as a performer. The new rules for "Best New Artist" state that any artist that has received previous nominations is disqualified from running.

The 2019 Grammy nominees will officially be revealed on December 5th.

Not happening: Cardi B, 26, and Post Malone, 23, have been declared ineligible for the best new artist award for the 2019 Grammys.
