Even for the round through 15 holes after two birdies and two bogeys, he roared home with a three-foot birdie at the par five 16th and a seven-footer at 17.

Tway birdied the final two holes of the final round, then birdied three straight playoff holes, the last one to clinch the win.

Tway's father, Bob Tway, also secured his first victory in a playoff 32 years ago at Torrey Pines, making them the 10th father and son Tour winners. I talk with dad every night. "I played probably 63 holes of pretty damn good golf, and nine holes I'd like to have back". I can't wait to call him. "It's been a long ride but this is why you work hard right here". "Finally got here and it feels wonderful".

Australian Aaron Baddeley has tied for fourth place as Kevin Tway claimed his maiden US PGA Tour victory in the season-opening Safeway Open after a three-man, sudden-death playoff.

His retreat let the pack back into contention in what turned into a wild finish in conditions that started out extremely windy before abating by the final few holes.

Baddeley shot a closing three-under 69 to finish one shot outside an all-American playoff involving overnight leader Brandt Snedeker (74), Ryan Moore (67) and Tway (71) who were tied at 14 under. The five-time major victor, who had been pleasantly surprised by his first two rounds after a tough 0-2 performance at the Ryder Cup in France last week, finished with three bogeys and three birdies, picking up a stroke at the 16th but unable to take advantage of the more favorable wind at 17 and 18. Snedeker was eliminated with a par on the first extra hole.

The title was decided at the 10th, Tway carding a three on the par-4 for the win.
