PlayStation announce when you'll be able to change your PSN ID

Following on from the strong rumours last week, PlayStation Blog have confirmed that PSN Name changes are finally headed to the network with the functionality being tested in the Preview program.

Sony will be testing a feature to let you do just that as part of the PlayStation Preview Program, the company said in a blogpost Wednesday. The gist is that the first hit is free, and after that you'll have to pay the nominal fee of $9.99 that Microsoft also charges. Some games released before 1st April 2018 may not play nicely with new names, and in particular this might affect PS3 and PS Vita titles. PlayStation Plus subscribers will be able to change their name again for $4.99 instead. Numerous most popular PS4 games that were released prior to that date will work as well, but beware, several games will not have the PSN ID change function. So 24 year-old TW33NY_BOppErZ can now rest easy that they can change their handle to something more palatable in the new year.

While all PlayStation 4 games published after April 1, 2018 will be compatible with this new feature, anything published before that date is not guaranteed. Still, a list of compatible games will be available on the PlayStation site, so hopefully users will soon know which games to avoid.

"During the preview program, you will be able to change your online ID as many times as you want". Whether you decide to display your old ID or not, you will not be able to reverse the decision after completing the PSN ID change process.

The preview program for the long-awaited feature will go live at the end of November, 2018, followed by a full rollout scheduled for early 2019 if all goes to plan. Now, you won't be able to change your name quite yet, but rest assured that it's coming.

When you change your online ID, you will have the option to display your previous ID with your new ID, so your friends can recognize you.
