NES – Nintendo Switch Online adds The Legend of Zelda special version

The new Legend of Zelda save lets you play the original armed with tons of Rupees and items from the start. Yes, that's the actual title for a new version of the seminal action adventure game, one which exists as its own standalone entry in the list of NES games alongside regular The Legend of Zelda.

The latest addition to Nintendo Switch Online's NES emulator is an interesting one - an official ROM hack of The Legend of Zelda. GameSpot spoke to creative director Thomas Grip who told the publication that he's a big fan of Nintendo and believes being able to play the game in handheld mode would bring a new dimension to the series.

Last week, Nintendo announced a few new titles making their way to subscribers of the Nintendo Switch Online service this month, but it seems there was a little surprise the company forgot to mention at the time.

Nintendo has released the three latest NES games announced for October for the Nintendo Switch Online NES library, being Solomon's Key, Super Dodge Ball, and NES Open Tournament Golf, but it also came with an unannounced fourth addition - The Legend of Zelda - Living the life of luxury!. It is essentially Zelda on steroids. Instead, the game simply uses a save file that gives Link immediate access to the White Sword, Magical Shield, Blue Ring, and Power Bracelet, along with a red potion, additional heart containers, some secondary items (Food, Letter), and a full complement of 255 rupees, eight bombs, and nine keys. Second Quest is a "more hard version of the game". Especially because Game Genie isn't a thing any more. The original 20 include classics like Donkey Kong, Double Dragon, Dr. Mario, Super Mario Bros, and Tecmo Bowl.
