'Days of Our Lives' Star Peggy McCay Dead at 90

McCay joined the cast of Days of Our Lives in 1983 and portrayed the role of Brady family matriarch Caroline for 35 years until 2016.

Peggy McCay, better known to Days of Our Lives fans as Caroline Brady on the NBC soap opera, died on Sunday, her costar and friend Deidre Hall confirmed in a message on Facebook. McCay has never married, nor had children of her own. "She was a friend, an activist and a real scrapper!" She had a long career as an actress, mostly appearing on television.

Peggy was born on November 3, 1927 in New York City; her birth name was Margaret Ann McCay. She loved working at Days of Our Lives almost to the end. I backed her up as she ferociously took on doctors and nurses to make sure he had the very best care. She always appreciated you, her loyal fans, for all of the love and support that you gave her throughout the years.

Frank Parker, who played her on-screen husband Shawn Brady on Days Of Our Lives passed away just weeks earlier.

"Well Peggy, this is unexpected", Nichols, who played her son-in-law, wrote on Instagram. "The last time I saw you, you talked about how eager you were to get back to work", he wrote. You said it with such conviction and longing. Gave your audiences inspired performances and your fellow actors your strength and inspiration and absolute love of the work. McCay also earned four Daytime Emmys nominations during her time on Days of Our Lives. "If you would like to show your support please visit the Kitty Bungalow, Peggy's favorite charity, at Kitty Bungalow". I am so grateful for the time I had with you. Additional credits include General Hospital, Gunsmoke and Lou Grant. Sending love to your loved ones. She won a primetime Emmy in 1991 for her guest work on CBS' The Trials of Rosie O'Neill.
