BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH: 'Screenings and self-checks are extremely important'

A local CrossFit gym is doing its part to help support Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

While breast cancer is most often found in women who are age 50 and older, the disease can also affect younger women. Each Monday, thanks to our partners at IU Health Arnett, we will feature different breast cancer topics to help spread awareness. "We want to find a cure so that our kids and our grandchildren never have to hear those words, have you have breast cancer". A portion of the proceeds from their sales will go to support missions and programs in the fight against breast cancer.

"These cells usually form a tumor that can often be seen on an x-ray or felt as a lump", the American Cancer Society wrote. "The goal is before a mammogram can even detect it", said McBurney. And while it is more common in women than in men, this is not a disease that is limited to one gender, race or socioeconomic background.

Smith encourages women to get screened for breast cancer during October.

"Overall, patients are experiencing better outcomes as a result of state-of-the-art treatment options and less extensive surgery", she added.

Breast cancer death rates have decreased almost 40 percent since 1990 as a result of screenings and better treatment, according to the American College of Radiology.

The Prescott Police Department is honoring the community, and members of the department family, during October Breast Cancer Awareness Month by participating in a nationwide effort known as The Pink Patch project.
