The Florida Department of Health in Duval County has reported a fourth confirmed human case of WNV, and the Florida Department of Health in Nassau County reported the second human WNV case.

In July, two cases of West Nile virus were reported in Johnson County, Kansas health officials said.

West Nile virus and encephalitis are spread through the bite of an infected mosquito.

According to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention, one in five people who are infected develop a fever and other symptoms. He spent 17 days in the hospital in August as doctors did tests to determine the cause for his extreme illness.

The City of Gainesville has received it first positive results of West Nile Virus. In many cases, a horse has to be euthanized when it contracts West Nile virus.

Although Sanford Vermillion did not provide exact numbers, they confirmed there has been more than one case. About 1 percent, or about 1 in 150, with West Nile virus will develop severe neurological disease.

Health officials said that the animal exposure is another indicator of how widespread the risk of disease is in Vermont. The adult case was hospitalized and is now home recovering. "Horse owners need to work with their veterinarians to make sure their animals are appropriately vaccinated for West Nile virus". The virus can not be transmitted directly between animals and humans.

Symptoms of WNV vary widely depending on a person's risk for more severe disease that involves the central nervous system.
