What about the Moon seemed to promising to him? But Maezawa's net worth is estimated at just shy of three billion by Forbes, and Musk said the fashion magnate's deposit for the trip was "significant", i.e. likely in the tens or even hundreds of millions.

The billionaire said he wondered what would've happened if famous artists, painters, creatives, and songwriters had experienced what he wanted to experience.

Indeed Musk went out of his way several times to thank NASA for all of their support and that much of what was announced today would nto have been possible without NASA's support. What wonderful masterpiece would he have created? "Once I got started, I couldn't stop thinking of who else [could have been affected]". He said about BFR, it's "making people excited about the future - about getting up in the morning". Apparently he "bought all the seats" on the rocket and wants to take a handful of artists with him as part of an art project called #dearMoon.

Maezawa said that he plans to invite six to eight artists, architects, designers and other creative people on the week-long journey. "This presents an opportunity for humans to return to deep space for the first time in 45 years and they will travel faster and further into the Solar System than any before them". "This is my lifelong dream", Maezawa said.

"I think, overall, It's going to be great to inspire others", said Tracy Lamm, the chief operating officer at Space Center Houston.

After that, the BFR will move on to larger scale tests - with Mr. Musk noting that the entire BFR system will be tested in an uncrewed configuration before Maezawa and his fellow passengers embark on their voyage around the moon.

At the BFR announcement this evening, Mr. Musk and Maezawa confirmed that the primary reason the mission switched to BFR was to increase the number of artists who could join Maezawa on the flight.

SpaceX's passenger will be the first person to take a space flight toward the moon who did not train through a formal program like NASA.

Elon Musk revealed the identity of SpaceX's first private passenger to fly around the moon: a billionaire entrepreneur from Japan. The trip was to have taken around a week.

The BFR was originally meant to take people from Earth to the red planet.

It's not clear whether the BFR tourism mission has any link to an announcement SpaceX made in February 2017.

Musk has previously said he wants the rocket to be ready for an unpiloted trip to Mars in 2022, with a crewed flight in 2024, though his ambitious production targets have been known to slip.

He also talked about the sobering possibilities that the best chance for survival of the human race might not be on Earth.

"I know that sounds insane, and we don't usually meet our time lines, but I wanted you to know at least order of magnitude, that's what we're thinking", Shotwell said. He also mentioned that SpaceX spends less than five percent of its budget on the BFR, but it could increase.

"How many people would've looked at SpaceX in 2008 and imagined that in 2018 we'd be where we are?" Musk said when Business Insider asked about the interior design.
