Barty dominated the nervous world No.18, who made 31 unforced errors, to close out the quarter-final 6-3 6-1 in just 55 minutes.

Stephens, the world No. 3, has had a productive 2018, winning a hard-court title in Miami in March and making the French Open final, where the 25-year-old by beaten by Halep.

Top seed Simona Halep sent Caroline Garcia packing for the second consecutive year at the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Friday with a 7-5 6-1 win to set up a semifinal showdown with Ashleigh Barty on Saturday.

With the win Stephens advances to her second consecutive Rogers Cup semifinal after falling to Caroline Wozniacki a year ago.

Next up for Halep is Australian Barty, who strolled to a 6-3 6-1 win over Kiki Bertens in their quarterfinal match earlier in the day.

"I think the match was a very good level of tennis even if the rhythm was a little bit mixed".

She then raced through the second set 6-1 with minimum fuss.

The top-ranked Romanian will play for the title Sunday against the third-ranked Sloane Stephens in a rematch of Halep's victory in the French Open final.

"It's an fantastic feeling to be able to talk again at this ceremony as a victor", Halep said.

She eventually managed to break the American in the seventh, but Stephens replied with her own and ultimately closed out the match 6-3 6-3. "I hope in the future it's going to be better".

Stephens went up on two Halep double faults, but the Romanian stormed back to take the set.

"When you're playing good matches in big tournaments like this, I don't think it's peaking too soon".

Halep played four matches in three days after a night session was postponed because of rain.

Stephens added three more breaks to take the second set, but lost her serve to open the third.

Barty, the world No. 16, has eclipsed her previous best at the tournament, a place in the last 16 when it was held in Toronto past year.
