Idris Elba has reignited rumours that he could be set to take over the role of James Bond from Daniel Craig with a cryptic tweet that has sent fans into a frenzy.

"My name's Elba, Idris Elba" the actor tweeted following widespread media pick-up this week of a British tabloid report that Bond producer Barbara Broccoli told director Antoine Fuqua "it is time" for a non-white actor to star as 007.

One wrote: "If you're the next Bond, it will be the first Bond film I ever see", while another said "please be 007 dont tease us like this get that contract signed!" The original story came from United Kingdom tabloid The Daily Star, which claimed that director Antoine Fuqua spoke with James Bond producer Barbara Broccoli about implementing a Black James Bond into the franchise.

However, The Hollywood Reporter contacted a representative for Fuqua who denied the report was true. A rep from Elba's team declined to comment, but THR claims sources within his camp are saying that they are not aware of any overtures.

Elba has always been rumoured to be in the running to take over the role of 007.

Craig will return for the fifth time as Bond in 2019, in an as yet unnamed movie directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle.
