According to Astrology Ireland: "This year Astronomy Ireland is to take part in a Nationwide Perseid Watch, where you simply count the number of meteors - or shooting stars - you see".

"This shower is named after the constellation Perseus, from which the meteors appear to come from in the sky".

"I think that everybody should see this", said Miralem Mehic, a Bosnian from an global group of star gazers who watched the light show at the Sand Pyramids - an area of naturally occurring sand columns - near the town of Foca.

The Mleiha Archaeological and Eco-tourism Project in Sharjah has geared up its preparation for the Perseid Meteor Shower, scheduled to light the UAE skies on Sunday from 8pm to 1am.

They arise when the Earth passes through the debris of Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1862.

"Every year in August, we sort of sweep through the leftovers of that comet and the tiny little particles that it left behind enter into the Earth's atmosphere", explains Brar. Most vaporize as they descend, but some explode.

"This year the moon is young and will not obstruct the vision, so we will be able to see 100 "shooting stars" an hour", Muhamed Muminovic, a member of the Sarajevo Orion astrological society, told Reuters.
