The victor will replace term-limited Gov. Rick Snyder, a Republican. Ocasio-Cortez, who burst onto the national scene when she upset Rep. Joe Crowley (D., N.Y.) in the Democratic primary in June, deflected by saying the current system causes sticker shock.

Michigan's Islamist Democratic gubernatorial candidate, Abdul El-Sayed, was defeated by Gretchen Whitmer, Cori Bush in Missouri's 1st District lost to incumbent William Lacy Clay, and Fayrouz Saad in Michigan's 11th Congressional District landed in fourth place out of five candidates.

She'll face state Attorney General Bill Schuette (R) in November.

Whitmer was considered the favorite because of her political experience and broad support from organized labor and other key groups.

Abdul El-Sayed from MI, who was on the ticket for governor, fell 20 percentage points behind his Democratic competition, even with both Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez coming out to stump for him. El-Sayed especially courted the party's more liberal, pro-Bernie Sanders wing, as did Thanedar, who spent millions of dollars of his own money on his campaign.

It was a high-stakes primary for a party that's hoping to ride a "blue wave" back to power in Lansing and is still grappling with internal fault lines exposed during the 2016 presidential election. "Michigan is one of the DGA's top targets for pickup this cycle, and Gretchen is a terrific candidate". She worked across the aisle to help expand Medicaid coverage to more than 680,000 Michiganders, and has concrete plans to fix Michigan's roads and improve its education system.
