These are the celebrities hit hardest by account crackdown — Twitter purge

Why President Trump Just Lost Over 100,000 Twitter Followers

Why President Trump Just Lost Over 100,000 Twitter Followers

Basically, he's lost half his Twitter followers in the purge.

Twitter is no longer counting as followers any accounts that have been locked because of suspected fraud, Chief Executive Jack Dorsey posted on Thursday.

His predecessor, Barack Obama, was hit even harder, falling by more than 2.5 million followers in the past 24 hours to 101 million followers.

It follows renewed scrutiny over fake news and users on social media.

You can see it here. He's likely still going to keep tweeting out news and calling others out on their fake news reports, but the president and many others are going to be doing it to smaller audiences thanks to the Twitter purge.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's following on Twitter has declined by around 2,70,000 in just a matter of two days following a crackdown by the social media company against fake accounts.

According to Twitter, the new measures are aimed at improving accuracy in a bid to make the site a "more trusted service for public conversation". This week, the company said it will remove these from profiles, reducing the number of followers users have.

Perry and Rihanna lost a combined 5 million Twitter followers.

As Twitter continues to rid its platform of suspicious accounts, many users, including influential profiles like U.S. President Donald Trump, could see a significant drop in followers.

It's always been an open secret that numerous Twitter users rely on bogus accounts and bots to inflate their follower count. Twitter locks accounts when they display a sudden change of behaviour, like sending lots of unsolicited replies.

"In most cases, these accounts were created by real people, but we can not confirm that the original person who opened the account still has control and access to it", he wrote in a blog post describing the change. By Thursday evening, the @POTUS handle had actually gained a number of followers, even though the numbers are still continuing to fluctuate a little here and there.

And while Obama lost more followers than Trump, he also started out with almost double the follow count.

The average user was told to expect a drop of four or fewer followers, but warned others would "experience a more significant drop".
