'Mary Queen of Scots' Trailer: Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie Reign Supreme

Here is the first trailer for Mary Queen of Scots, starring Saoirse Ronan as the young monarch and Margot Robbie as her rival Queen Elizabeth I. Be sure to check out the first Mary Queen of Scots trailer, courtesy of the Focus Features YouTube channel, for yourself below.

These are, to be certain, two formidable actresses, even though one (Robbie) often pushes against the tide by selecting roles that one wouldn't necessarily expect of her. Ronan has actually been tied to this project since 2013, several years before she delighted audiences in Lady Bird, for which she earned an Oscar nod (her third one, and she's now approaching her mid 20s).

Despite the fact they shared the same ancestry, the pair's fierce rivalry will eventually lead to death, destruction and despair. Meanwhile, Margot Robbie has continued her streak of unpredictable career choices by playing the Virgin Queen, a performance that arrives after her Oscar nomination for I, Tonya and in sharp contrast as well to Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad.

A digitally recreated Linlithgow Palace features in the new trailer.

The film's other stars include: Jack Lowden, Joe Alwyn, Gemma Chan, Martin Compston, Ismael Cordova, Brendan Coyle, Ian Hart, Adrian Lester, James McArdle, David Tennant, and Guy Pearce. Here, Rourke works off a script by House of Cards creator Beau Willimon.

Between The Crown and Yorgos Lanthimos' The Favourite, the British monarchy is still proving a major draw for filmmakers and storytellers - and now we can throw Mary Queen of Scots into the mix. She was Queen of France at 16 and then widowed at 18, deciding to return home to Scotland without a husband, where she has to carefully compete with her sister - Queen Elizabeth I of England, ruling over Scotland and England at the time. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne.
