BLACK WIDOW Director Hired (with SCARLETT JOHANSSON's Endorsement)

Cate Shortland Will Direct the Black Widow Movie

Cate Shortland Will Direct the Black Widow Movie

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Australian director Cate Shortland was selected by the superhero studio from a pool of over 70 directors, most of whom interviewed with Marvel President and CEO Kevin Feige, Johansson and other studio executives. Last month the director hunt narrowed with Amma Asante (Belle) and Maggie Betts (Novitiate) arising as the finalists alongside Shortland, while Inglourious Basterds breakout Melanie Laurent and Boys Don't Cry filmmaker Kimberly Pierce almost made the final cut.

Black Widow's latest draft was scripted by Jac Schaeffer (The Hustle), and will focus on Romanoff's past, before the events of the first Avengers film.

"Shortland, who hails from Australia and does not have agency representation, had a fan in Johansson, who pushed for the helmer". The actress admired Shortland's handling of the female lead in Lore, a critically acclaimed 2012 drama that told of a young woman who leads her siblings through Germany as the Allied army rolls in.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, including whether the film will be an origin tale or set after the next "Avengers" movie. Got any theories on how this might fit in with Marvel's next phase of feature films?

Stay tuned for further updates on the Black Widow movie as they become available. Have you seen Berline Syndrome and Lore, and if so, do you think Shortland's a strong choice for the job?
