Would she swim with sharks again?

Her boyfriend's father was photographing Katarina at the time, and accidentally caught the whole incident in a series of images.

When asked to describe the entire ordeal, 19-year-old Katarina Zarutskie had one word in mind. She told the BBC that a "local resident" who was watching the photo session from the pier encouraged her to float on her back.

Immediately after getting out of the water, Zarutskie went to a clinic at the marina and had her wound cleaned and wrapped. "Next thing I knew I was underwater and I felt this".

You see, Katarina grew up in a surfing community in Southern California and has no fear of sharks, which is why she was so calm about swimming with them.

Zarutskie has almost doubled her following on Instagram since her story came out; however, she has since made her account private, partly because she has "received a lot of rude and hateful comments from people that were saying ridiculous things", she told BBC. "It seemed safe. And you know, I had seen all these photos, so I totally thought it was okay", she said.

After she was bitten, she held her arms up out of the water to keep her blood from attracting more sharks. Katarina posted them to social media, where she's been overwhelmed with comments asking for details.

"It was a very scary experience", she recalls.

She's since had to make her Instagram private, after people accused her of blaming the sharks and causing the situation herself, but she insists that's not the case.

"I would recommend people to do it, but be smart about it". She went to the hospital to get treatment for her infected wounds.

Since coming out of the water and reflecting on the situation, she added: "They are wild animals and it's an uncontrollable situation". "[The doctors] now believe that I still have pieces of the shark teeth in my arm and I will forever have a scar", Zarutskie said, according to NBC News.
