Joaquin Phoenix is set to play the Joker in an upcoming origin movie for Warner Bros.

Whatever the case may be, Phoenix is one of the finest actors of his generation and watching him portray the gradual descent of a normal man into the deranged mind of the Joker will be fascinating.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, and independently confirmed by Gizmodo, the film will start shooting in NY in September. The film will reportedly deal with what it takes for a character like The Joker to fall into madness and become a master criminal.

From a screenplay by Scott Silver (The Finest Hours) and Todd Phillips (The Hangover), Phillips will begin directing this picture in September, on location in NY. Todd Phillips (The Hangover) will direct the film, with Martin Scorsese attached as an executive producer.

"I see [a superhero movie] as any other movie", Phoenix continued. The last to do so was Jared Leto in 2016 in "Suicide Squad" to less-than-stellar reviews. If you have the ability to transcend the genre, then that's what you want to do.

Well, it's definite. Warner Bros has formally announced that it's pressing ahead with a thus-far untitled Joker origins movie.

There is no release date as yet, which is unusual for a comic book film, although all signs point to this being quite different from the current DC and Marvel offerings.
