An Elmira, Ont., couple's cross-Canada tractor tour ended tragically Monday in Saskatchewan.

Henk and Bettina Shuurmans were driving across the country on a John Deere tractor decorated with a life-sized replica dairy cow to promote discussion about the importance of supply-management to family farms in Canada.

Medavie Health Services told Global News that Henk was taken to hospital in stable condition.

The crash happened just after 9 a.m. CT on Highway 16 when the couple's tractor collided with a semi-trailer truck.

Murray Sherk, a board member of the Dairy Farmers of Ontario, said people at the organization "were really shocked". It was being documented on Twitter.

The driver of the semi was uninjured.

"SaskMilk and Saskatchewan dairy farmers were devastated to hear about the accident", Joy Smith, from SaskMilk said in a statement.

"The passion that Henk and Bettina Schuurmans had for the Canadian dairy industry was evident in their efforts in organizing and embarking on their tour across Canada".

A gofundme campaign has been established to help the family with any expenses incurred.
