1 dead, 20 injured in S.Africa vintage plane crash

One person has died and 19 others have been injured after the plane they were travelling in crashed in Wonderboom in Pretoria north.

He said: "Initial reports show that approximately 20 people had sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical".

Police spokesman Isaac Mahamba told South African broadcaster eCNA: "There is smoke all over and paramedics are on the scene".

ER24 later said on its Twitter feed that one fatality had since been reported from the scene, and that it had occured "in the cockpit".

The emergency service's spokesperson Russel Meiring also confirmed this to Independent Online (IOL).

Images from the site showed the plane broken into several pieces.

Mr Meiring said ER24 helicopters were on the scene to airlift any critical patients to hospital.

A plane has crashed near the Wonderboom airport in Pretoria, South Africa.

"We saw the plane and we heard a thumping sound", adds Storm.

It had been due to fly to Aviodrome via east Africa, through Egypt, Croatia, Austria to the Netherlands.

According to Brandt‚ the plane was repainted in "the classic Martinair scheme for its imminent departure to its new home at the Aviodrome Lelystad in the Netherlands".

Civil Aviation Authority investigators were at the scene and started the process of determining the cause of the accident.
