Trump renews call to end filibuster amid immigration furor

United States president Donald Trump may have doomed the chances for a House Republican immigration bill after urging party lawmakers to abandon the compromise effort they have been working on for weeks, the media reported.

The first bill collapsed in a 193-231 vote, and the vote on the second was pushed back until Friday to avoid a second quick defeat.

At a White House cabinet meeting, he pledged to sign an immigration reform bill if Congress can pass it. They also downplayed the potential impact of Trump's tweet.

The House Republican immigration overhaul is dangling precariously. Ryan Costello (R-Pa.), who is also retiring, quipped in Twitter. Republican leaders are expected to host a briefing later to answer questions from members still unsure about the legislation.

Trump's latest tweets came after the Republican-controlled House failed to attract enough Republican support to pass a hard-line immigration bill that mirrored the president's positions.

Stubborn differences between conservative and more moderate Republicans in the House have stalled immigration legislation on Capitol Hill, with a vote on a compromise measure delayed until next week.

GOP leaders said they'd press on anyway, but his comments further damaged their attempt to win over wavering lawmakers for a measure already facing likely defeat. Just Tuesday, he met privately with GOP lawmakers and told them he supported the immigration legislation and would have their backs in November.

"They can be killers, they can be thieves, they can be terrible people - the Democrats say it's okay for them to be in our country". The status of the so-called Dreamers has been in limbo since federal courts blocked Trump's attempts previous year to rescind a temporary deportation-relief program.

When the crisis of family separations erupted at the border, GOP leaders revised the bill to bolster a provision requiring parents and children to be held together in custody.

Children and workers are seen at a tent encampment recently built near the Tornillo Port of Entry on June 19, 2018 in Tornillo, Texas. New tariffs have strained relationships with European and North American allies and his Middle East peace plan is still under development amid a standoff with the Palestinians after he said the decades-old problem wouldn't be hard to solve.

The new details came after more than two months of confusion how detained migrant parents, who are shuttled from facility to facility run by different government agencies, would ever reunite with their children, who are sent to shelters and foster homes scattered across the country.

What is unclear, though, is whether the president realizes the moderate Republicans he is alienating by shunning their immigration overhaul are among those most endangered in the midterm elections. Trump had publicly backed the bill earlier in the week.

The House GOP compromise bill is the product of hard-fought negotiations between the conservative and moderate factions that dragged on for several weeks.

Republicans facing hard re-election fights need to show constituents they're sensitive to the plight of Dreamers as well as families who have crossed the border seeking asylum, which is included in the compromise bill. It made steeper cuts to legal immigration programs and had little support even among Republican members.

"What is the objective of the House doing good immigration bills when you need 9 votes by Democrats in the Senate, and the Dems are only looking to Obstruct (which they feel is good for them in the Mid-Terms)", Trump tweeted. Republicans are getting no help from Democrats, who uniformly oppose the legislation.
