This is how North Korean media covered Trump-Kim summit

The optimistic summit was a remarkable change in dynamics from less than a year ago, when Trump was threatening "fire and fury" against Kim, who in turn scorned the American president as a "mentally deranged U.S. dotard".Beyond the impact on both leaders' political fortunes, the summit could shape the fate of countless people _ the citizens of impoverished North Korea, the tens of millions living in the shadow of the North's nuclear threat, and millions more worldwide. This meeting came after months of deliberations between two countries over the time and venue of the summit.

Trump said that the denuclearization process would start "very quickly" and that Kim had told him a North Korean missile testing site "is going to be destroyed very soon".

Yet Pompeo on Monday drew a firm line, saying the USA plans to keep sanctions in place until North Korea eliminates its nuclear weapons capability.

Mr. Abe, meanwhile, thanked Trump for raising the abduction issue with Kim and said that "Japan will deal firmly with North Korea face-to-face" to resolve it. Trump called the drills "provocative and inappropriate", adding that he ultimately wants to "bring our soldiers home" - a reference to some 25,000 USA troops stationed in South Korea. "We believe the Security Council should make efforts to support the diplomatic efforts at the present time", he said.

"Yeah, they are going to stay". So we look nice and handsome and thin? Trump had said on Saturday he would know within a minute of meeting Kim whether he would reach a deal.

The United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula. "I think our whole relationship with North Korea and the whole Korean peninsula will be a very much different situation than it has been in the past".

In what was a rare but irresistible opportunity to press Kim on his plans, a reporter with the Los Angeles Times, Noah Bierman, asked: "Chairman Kim, will you denuclearize?"

The communication in North Korea is quite known, mostly for its handful of channels.

Kim was heard telling Trump through a translator: "I think the entire world is watching this moment".

But, today they were seen shaking hands in a foreign land discussing two powerful countries.

On the other hand, given Trump's prior signaling that the outcome of the meeting would be based on his personal feelings about Kim upon meeting him, and his threats to walk out if he didn't sense that the dictator was serious about negotiating denuclearization, we should perhaps take heart that the most significant event in nuclear diplomacy since the end of the Cold War did not disintegrate on the runway because Trump got a bad vibe off his counterpart.

Tensions between the United States and North Korea escalated a year ago after Pyongyang tested several ballistic missiles and performed a nuclear test, while Kim and Trump traded threats and insults.

And the president reiterated that North Korea had committed to denuclearization.

The basketball player is in Singapore for the summit, but the White House had said he will play no official role. Trump had originally agreed to the summit, then called it off before reviving it again.

"We're prepared to start a new history and we're ready to write a new chapter between our nations", Trump said. He praised Kim for entering into negotiations with the USA, a longtime foe. "Glad I fired him on Apprentice!"

At the end of their 45-minute meeting, Trump said the summit had gone "better than anybody could have expected" and called it a "tremendous success".

Inside, they sat alongside each other against a backdrop of North Korean and US flags, with Kim beaming broadly as the USA president gave him a thumbs up.

Late Tuesday, Trump took to Twitter to say there was "no limit" to what North Korea could achieve "when it gives up its nuclear weapons and embraces commerce" and engagement with the world.

Ryabkov said that Moscow was willing to assist in implementing the deal and hopes that six-party talks involving the two Koreas, the United States, Russia, Japan, and China will be revived at some point.

Trump announced that he will be freezing United States military "war games" with its ally South Korea while negotiations between the two countries continue.
