Merkley Trump Kim summit a'colossal disappointment

It is clear what Kim achieved.

Kim's commitment to denuclearize was included in a document signed after the first ever meeting between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader. China, the northern neighbor of Pyongyang, said it would be willing to play a constructive role in further U.S.

"We have right now 32,000 soldiers in South Korea". Trump cast that decision as a cost-saving measure, but also called the exercises "inappropriate" while talks continue.

"It's a joke. There's nothing in that agreement that North Korea hasn't agreed to 10 times before", said Jeffrey Lewis, director of the East Asia program at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies.

But Richardson also said U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo should be credited for his diplomatic efforts.

"A handshake is no substitute for a binding, verifiable deal", Warren said in a statement Tuesday afternoon. "We are proud of Otto and miss him".

Schumer said Trump's meeting with Kim gave "a brutal and repressive dictatorship the worldwide legitimacy it has long craved".

"It is the most watered-down joint statement concerning these two nations ever", said Sung-Yoon Lee, a North Korea expert at Tufts University.

However, the New Yorker noted that the brief agreement didn't meet standards previously sought by the US, in that North Korea's end of the bargain did not include that their denuclearization would be verifiable or irreversible. The document did not include specifics on the timeline or nature of denuclearization, however. "I don't think they're looking so much to the Mediterranean, I don't think they're looking so much at Syria like they were, with total confidence, I don't think they're so confident right now".

"In North Korea there is no freedom of speech", he said.

The first USA responses to the dramatic meeting came as Trump and Kim headed home from Singapore.

Mr Trump added that he wanted improvement on human rights from the North Korean leader. At a certain point, I really think he's going to do something about it. It followed a public greeting, one-on-one meeting, and expanded bilateral meeting.

In the run-up to the meeting, Trump had predicted the two men might strike a nuclear deal or forge a formal end to the Korean War in the course of a single meeting or over several days. But before the summit officially began, the White House announced Monday that Trump planned to leave Singapore on Tuesday night, saying nuclear talks with North Korea were moving "more quickly than expected". "Maybe in a year you'll be interviewing and I'll say I made a mistake".

Trump's comments on Warmbier came after Vice President Mike Pence reassured the OH man's father when he spoke to him ahead of the Singapore summit.

During a press conference held after the summit, President Trump noted that he showed Kim a video on what his country could look like if it traded in its nuclear weapons for economic revitalization.

Experts believe the North is close to being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep scepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the United States and the North.
