Hours after the noon PT deadline imposed by Golden Boy Promotions for Gennady Golovkin to agree on the financial terms for a rematch against Canelo Alvarez, the much-anticipated middleweight title pay-per-view bout is on for September 15 in Las Vegas.

A Wednesday deadline set by Alvarez's promoter Oscar De La Hoya appeared to have passed with no agreement in place, only for a sudden turn of events late in the evening. Alvarez, meanwhile, was expected to seek out top contender Daniel Jacobs, who fought to a close decision loss against Golovkin in 2017, according to Golden Boy.

A May 5, 2018 rematch was canceled when Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) failed two drug tests for the performance-enhancing drug clenbuterol.

The terms of the deal have not been disclosed, but may be a bit closer to a 55-45 split between Alvarez and Golovkin, and not the recent offer of 57.5% for Canelo and 42.5% for Golovkin.

Golovkin was the holder of three of the major world titles but was recently stripped of the IBF belt after declining to agree to fight mandatory challenger Sergey Derevyanchenko.

The Kazakh remains the unified WBC and WBA middleweight title holder.

"This is just the beginning", tweeted Golovkin following the announcement.
