Cristiano Ronaldo believes Liverpool sensation Mohamed Salah is a genuine contender to break his and Lionel Messi's decade-long dominance of the Ballon d'Or.

Ronaldo, Portugal's most capped player and record scorer, missed the first week of training and the friendlies against Tunisia and Belgium after playing for Real Madrid in the Champions League final against Liverpool at the end of last month.

Salah, 25, netted 44 goals in all competitions under Jurgen Klopp this season.

But while Ronaldo is ready to lead his country against Spain in their first World Cup match on Friday, Salah faces a race against time to be fit for Egypt's opener against Uruguay on the same day.

Portugal midfielder Manuel Fernandes said Cristiano Ronaldo "doesn't look at all anxious about his future" as the Real Madrid superstar contemplates a possible exit from the Spanish giants this summer. "Salah is certainly one of them".

"It's perfectly normal, however Portugal were the champions of Europe because of the group, not its individuals".

But he is as merciless as ever in front of goal (he scored 15 goals in nine World Cup qualifiers) and is so feared by defenders that he can shape a game through his personality alone.

"I hope that I have the chance to play against Cristiano Ronaldo, we must be focused on cancelling him out", he told reporters.

Portugal are ranked fourth by Federation Internationale de Football Association and won nine of their 10 European qualifying group matches. "It's extremely unlikely that we'll see another player like him".
