Arsenal was close to appointing ex-midfielder Mikel Arteta as Arsene Wenger's successor after receiving blessing from Wenger himself.

Former PSG and Sevilla boss Emery blew away Arsenal's recruitment team - led by Gazidis, along with head of football relations Raul Sanllehi and head of recruitment Sven Mislintat - during a stunning presentation a fortnight ago.

It was thought that the Arsenal top job would be handed over to former star Mikel Arteta after it was reported that he has already agreed a deal with the Gunners.

"A source even told the newspaper, "[Emery] knew more about the Arsenal squad and every relevant detail about their career path and injury histories than people who had been at the club for years.

The duo will have a big say on who goes and who comes in at the Emirates this summer.

However, Arsenal board have made a dramatic U-turn, ditching plans to bring the Manchester City assistant coach and settling for outgoing Paris Saint-Germain manager Unai Emery.

Emery flew in to London for another interview yesterday and is now expected to be unveiled this week.

Emery announced last month he would leave French champions PSG when his contract expired at the end of the season.

However, Arsenal have instead chose to opt for experience with Emery, a man who has previously won three Europa League titles with Sevilla.
