Walmart Goes Upscale, Offering Lord & Taylor Brands

The shopping experience, which will be divvied up into Walmart's Everyday Brands and Premium Brands from Lord & Taylor sections, was meant to court high-income shoppers with its new offerings from more upscale brands. The store launches in a few weeks and will feature more than 125 brands, like Lord + Taylor, Lucky Brand, Vince Camuto, and Tommy Bahama.

The deal with Lord & Taylor also is a means for Walmart to better compete with Amazon, which has moved aggressively into clothing sales.

"The new experience is aligned with how customers shop the category, with editorial elements that inspire customers to browse and buy, and has already generated positive customer response", Incandela said in a statement on Tuesday. Lord + Taylor calls the partnership pivotal for the company.

Lord & Taylor is a high-end retailer that has been closing stores, and it even sold its flagship store to WeWork. This includes free two-day shipping on all orders that come in at $35 or more. "This is an example of how we are thinking differently and innovating", said RJ Cilley, senior vice president of Lord & Taylor's digital division, in comments reported by CNBC.

For decades, Walmart built a retail empire as the store offering the lowest prices on staples like toothpaste, milk and cat litter. "We are excited for the opportunity to serve exponentially more customers with our premium fashion offerings, including our famous dress selection and many stylish brands". According to CNBC, shoppers have been actively searching the retailer's existing ecommerce sites for premium brands, said Denise Incandela, head of fashion for Walmart's United States e-commerce operations. Each week, almost 270 million customers and members visit our more than 11,700 stores under 65 banners in 28 countries and eCommerce websites.

Founded in 1826, Lord & Taylor is one of Americas first department stores. Lord & Taylor is part of the Hudson's Bay Co. portfolio.
