Barcelona talisman Lionel Messi revealed that he will hate Neymar if he joined arch-rival Real Madrid.

"It would be bad because of everything that Ney means to Barcelona", Messi told TyC Sports. He added that "it is OK that he went the way he did, he won an important title here, he won the Champions League, won the Spanish league".

"If he ends up in Madrid it would be a tough blow for us and for all of Barcelona. And on a footballing level Madrid would be much stronger than they already are".

"I don't want to say I am happy with these kind of comparisons".

Neymar left Barcelona last August, becoming the world's most expensive soccer player in a transfer that upset many Barcelona fans.

But despite an impressive debut season in France, speculation has been rife that Neymar could be set to move on again.

Messi, the five-times World Player of the Year, said he was looking forward to the tournament in Russian Federation and was targeting at least a semi-final place with Argentina.

The former Chelsea and AS Roma player finished the 2017-18 Premier League campaign as the top scorer after finding the back of the net 32 times, two more than English and Tottenham Hotspur striker, Harry Kane and was also adjudged as the PFA Player of the Year as well as the Football Writer Association player of the year. "I will do my best to win it, 100 per cent".

Real Madrid are believed to be ready to offer him an escape back to La Liga, while there are even reports of a clause in his contract which allows him to move to the Bernabeu next summer.

Argentina beat Italy 2-0 in a March friendly but that victory was sandwiched by a 4-2 loss to Nigeria and a 6-1 hammering by Spain.
