Taking stock of the situation, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced an ex-gratia of Rs. 5 lakh to the family of people, killed in the incident. The PM said that Yogi Adityanath has also spoken and the state government is keeping an eye on the incident.

A statement issued by Adityanath's office said the district administration has been ordered to expedite the rescue work and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya would reach Varanasi shortly to oversee it.

According to media reports, two pillars of the under construction flyover collapsed in Varanasi's Cantt area. A boundary wall has been demolished to allow construction vehicles to assist in rescue operations. He said that the team has been formed to investigate the incident, and whoever is found guilty will not be spared.

Varanasi has been Prime Minister Narendra Modi' constituency since 2014. Over 50 people are feared trapped under the debris. The injured were rushed to SPG Divisional Hospital and also nearby private hospitals. The committee has been asked to furnish report within 48 hours.

There are many people now trapped. "Compensation of Rs 5 lakh for kin of those dead and Rs 2 lakh for seriously injured in the incident".

Varanasi District Magistrate Yogeshwar Ram Mishra said their prime focus for now was on rescue and relief.

The incident occurred post-noon, officials said adding rescue teams were rushed to the spot.

Modi said that the Uttar Pradesh government was monitoring the situation.

Yadav appealed to his party workers to cooperate with the administration in relief and rescue.
