Telcos to report subdued Q4 nos as Reliance Jio pressure continues

After taking over the telecom and feature phone segment, Reliance Jio is now apparently planning to disrupt the DTH space. The report also notes that the upcoming JioHome TV service will be a separate service altogether and not be a part of company's DTH services that has reportedly been postponed by the company for now.

The report says customers having Reliance Jio's data connection would be able to use the JioHomeTV service, wherein they would be able watch all SD channels for Rs 200 while all SD as well as HD channels for Rs 400.

Reliance Jio may be gearing to launch new service called Jio Home TV, which could turn out to be next market disrupter after the telecom operator took on some dominant telecom players with its VoLTE-enabled mobile network. We even saw leaked images of the device in question past year but the now there are reports that the company may have dropped the idea to launch a DTH service for now.

The Jio DTH service had earlier been subject to several leaks and we had even seen images of its Set-Top-Box along with the remote.

The battered telecom sector companies will be reporting another set of subdued numbers for the January-March quarter, with revenues likely to show a correction of as much as 40 per cent, analysts have said. The plan is already listed on the official MyJio app.

The JioHomeTV service could be the eMBMS (Enhanced Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service) that Reliance Jio has been testing over the last few months. It is also expected that the JioHome TV is the rebranding of JioBroadcast. The eMBMS is a hybrid technology that works on one-to-one system of architecture used by telcos instead of the one-to-many system that's used by TV and radio channels.

While there has been no confirmation or announcement from Reliance Jio regarding this, the company past year, during its quarterly update for the third quarter stated that it had successfully performed eMBMS broadcast streams across India.
