Amstel Gold Race results: Michael Valgren escapes to victory
Michael Valgren of Denmark claimed the victory in the 53rd edition of the Dutch cycling classic Amstel Gold Race on Sunday.
The Astana rider escaped late in the race from a group of eight, which included pre-race favourites such as the world champion Peter Sagan and Alejandro Valverde. It was his first Amstel Gold Race win.
Czech rider Roman Kreuziger, the victor in 2013, attacked in the final kilometers, but Valgren countered, passed his opponent and won.
Kreuziger and Valgren entered the final 800 metres with a significant gap to group behind, and prepared to battle it out in a sprint with Gasparotto looming just behind.
The group included the likes of Movistar's Alejandro Valverde, Bora-Hansgrohe's recent Paris-Roubaix victor Peter Sagan, Julian Alaphilippe of Quick-Step, Tim Wellens of Lotto-Soudal and his team-mate Jakob Fuglsang.
