Seven prison inmates were killed and 17 injured in an hours-long series of events involving multiple fights between inmates at a prison in SC, the state Corrections Department said on Twitter.

No officers were injured, said Jeffrey Taillon, communications director for the South Carolina Department of Corrections.

Taillon said multiple inmate fights broke out at 7:15 p.m. Sunday.

SC state police have been called to an "ongoing situation" at one of the state's most risky prisons.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections says seven inmates have died following an incident at Lee Correctional Institution. EMS crews from Florence County, Kershaw County, Lexington County and Hartsville also responded.

Lee Correctional is a maximum security facility - 55 miles east of Columbia - housing over 1,000 of South Carolina's most violent offenders.

Two officers were stabbed in a 2015 fight by two inmates that left one of them dead.
