Report: Dubai Tour and Abu Dhabi Tour to merge in 2019

The Abu Dhabi and Dubai Sports Council on Wednesday announced the merger of the Abu Dhabi Tour and Dubai Tour to hold a unified tour under to carry the name "UAE Tour" from next year 2019.

A memorandum to this effect has been signed on Wednesday by Arif Al Awani, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council and Saeed Hareb, Secretary General of the Dubai Sports Council. The unified race will run seven stages through the UAE, and retain the WorldTour status now belonging to the Abu Dhabi Tour, which completed its fourth edition in 2018. The Dubai Tour, in its fifth edition as of this February, was a 2.HC-rated event on the UCI's Asia Tour.

Quick-Step's Elia Viviani claimed the GC win at the Dubai Tour last month, while Alejandro Valverde rode to the overall victory in Abu Dhabi.

Both events already crossed into other emirates as part of their five-day routes.

Aref Al Awani, General Secretary of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, and Saeeb Hareb, Secretary General of Dubai Sports Council, announced the decision at a media briefing at the ADSC headquarters. The organisers have submitted two dates to the UCI for their ratification for the yearly calendar.

"The Abu Dhabi and Dubai Tours were both successful, now the UAE Tour is stronger to create a bigger impact all-round and provide the worldwide television audience to discover new areas and locations in the country".
