A wind warning for Leinster, Cork, Tipperary and Waterford is in place until 6pm while a rainfall warning for Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Wexford, Wicklow and Waterford. Accumulations of 30 to 50mm are expected with a risk of localised flooding.

St. Patrick's Day is forecast to be extremely cold with scattered snow showers mainly in eastern coastal counties and along the south coast with frost and snow predicted overnight.

After a cold St Patrick's Day, temperatures will fall to below zero on St Patrick's night with the possibility of snow in parts of Leinster and icy surfaces.

The bank holiday Monday looks like it is not going to be much better, with more flurries of snow and highs of just 7 degrees. Marchers and onlookers will face potentially bracing conditions - and have been warned to dress accordingly.

"On Saturday, St Patrick's Day will be dry in many areas, with some bright or sunny spells". That was an exceptional weather event. Minimum temperatures 6 to 8 Celsius. However, Ireland can spare a thought for MA in the United States where Logan Airport in Boston had to close yesterday as a major storm swept in and dropped more than 60cm of snow across the region.
