Ruby Walsh celebrates winning the 14:10 Racing Post Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices' Chase

The victory was a record seventh success in the Champion Hurdle for both Nicky Henderson and J P McManus, Buveur D'Air's trainer and owner respectively, and the victor will now attempt to emulate See You Then, who took the race three years in a row for Henderson in the 1980s.

"He scrapped it out today. It was a proper race and the runner-up put it up but my fella is battle-hardened and tough as nails".

"Buveur D'Air has been winning races by large margins all season and that was the first race he has been in".

The last two races each day are shown on subscription channel Racing UK.

"When Istabraq won it was a very emotional day because of the death [from cancer] of John Durkan", McManus said, "who bought the horse and without whose input I would never have owned him". And when we think of Istabraq, we always think of John.

"I thought Melon was going to beat me". Melon maybe went a neck up and I was glad to have Barry on my side.

"He battled hard, I tried to save as much as I could, he found it when he was needed". Today, we made some mistakes which made it a bit closer, but he's done it and that's the most important thing.

Like Istabraq, Buveur D'Air is now a dual victor of the Champion Hurdle at the age of seven and he is already quoted at around 5-2 to complete a treble next season.

Faugheen passed the post a well-beaten sixth and Mullins feels he now requires a step up in distance. "I may send him over a longer trip at Punchestown or maybe look at the race at Aintree", he said.

A limited amount of tickets are available for the next three days at the Festival.

Benie Des Dieux (9-2) provided Mullins with his ninth victory in 11 years in the OLBG Mares' Hurdle under an inspired Walsh ride and Rathvinden (9-2) completed the hat-trick in the hands of the trainer's son, Patrick, in the National Hunt Chase.

There are seven races on the card, with the final one getting underway at 5.30pm.
