President Donald Trump has replaced Rex Tillerson at Secretary of State with Central Intelligence Agency director Mike Pomeo, after months of speculation surrounding Tillerson's role in the Trump administration. He added, "I want to thank Rex Tillerson for his service".

A White House official said Trump wanted to have a new team in place ahead of upcoming talks with North Korea and various trade talks. The secretary cut short his diplomatic trip to Africa, returning to Washington, DC, on Monday.

He tweeted the news on Tuesday morning, thanking Tillerson for his service and saying that Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Trump and Tillerson, the former CEO of Exxon Mobile, have reportedly been at odds for months.

Before issuing his statement, Tillerson called his British counterpart Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson to discuss the investigation into last week's attempt to kill former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter in the southwest of England.

Last week, Trump's chief economic advisor Gary Cohn resigned after the president announced he would impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports.
