PNB scam

Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday taunted Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's silence on the Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam because his lawyer daughter had taken a hefty retainer fee from absconding diamantaire Mehul Choksi's Geetanjali Gems just a month before the scam became public.

The Congress President also attached a tweet of a news website titled "You know you're doing something right when the ruling dispensation tries to rebut a story that has not even been published yet".

In his tweet, he said: "It's now revealed that our FM's silence on the PNB SCAM was to protect his lawyer daughter, who was paid a large retainer by the accused just a month before the SCAM became public". Rahul Gandhi tweeted. He was referring to a media report which said Arun Jaitley's daughter's firm, Jaitley and Bakshi, was engaged by Geetanjali Gems in December 2017 on a retainership contract which lasted barely a month. "When other law firms of the accused have been raided by the CBI, why not hers?", adding the hashtag "#ModiRobsIndia".

According to the report, Arun Jaitley's son-in-law Jaiyesh Bakhshi confirmed the retainership received in December 2017, which was returned in January 2018. "We therefore felt it appropriate to unilaterally cancel their engagement and return their retainer", Bakhshi told The Wire.

While the Congress has been targeting the Modi government for "allowing" diamond merchants Nirav Modi and Mehul Choksi to "flee" the country, the BJP has hit back claiming that the scam has its origins in the UPA government.

Till date, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has carried out searches at over 198 locations across the country and seized properties worth almost Rs 60 billion, while the CBI has arrested at least 19 persons in the case so far.
