Google Assistant for iPad cranks up Siri’s competition

If you're an iOS user who prefers Google's apps and ecosystem, then good news, as the company is launching Google Assistant for iPad today.

Of course, there is a great deal of overlap with Apple's offering, Siri. A version for iPhone debuted last summer, but today is the first time this software runs well on a tablet. But the app also supports iOS 11's multitasking features, so you can use it side-by-side with other apps.

Is Google Assistant on iPad really necessary?

In May of a year ago, Google announced it was bringing Google Assistant to iPhones.

However, the Google software has no equivalent to "Hey Siri" on iOS devices. Once you're in the app, Google Assistant has most of the functionality you're used to on other platforms, whether its controlling home automation systems through voice commands, scheduling reminders, or composing text messages. Instead, users must push an on-screen button to get Google Assistant to start listening.
