Aadhaar deadline extended

Section 7 of Aadhaar Act relates to the targeted delivery of subsidies, benefits and services, the expenditure for which is incurred from the Consolidated Fund of India.

"The government can not insist on mandatory Aadhaar", said the five-judge Constitution Bench headed by the Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra. However, the deadline for subsidies, benefits will remain March 31.

The earlier deadline for linking the Aadhar was Mar 31.

The SC bench comprises of chief justice Misra, jutices AK Sikri, AM Khanwilkar, DY Chandrachud and Ashok Bhushan.

Having said that, even if the deadline to link Aadhaar with mobile numbers has been extended, we suggest you link your Aadhaar with your mobile number at the earliest before some new rules kick in.

The court said Aadhar will not be necessary to avail services like banking, cellphone connections and tatkal passport till a decision is taken on the issue.

The court made it clear that the extension of the time limit beyond March 31, 2018 shall apply for Aadhar linkage, besides the schemes of the Ministries/ Departments of the Union government and all state governments in similar terms. A judgment in the case, therefore, is unlikely before the end of this month, the report said.

On 22 February, former Karnataka High Court judge Justice KS Puttaswamy told the apex court several deaths reportedly occurred due to starvation on account of glitches in the Aadhaar-based public distribution system and the court must consider granting them compensation. The Bench then called the Attorney General for assistance in the issue.

Way back in December 2017 in a similar interim order, the SCI had extended the mandatory linking of Aadhaar with various services and welfare schemes until March 31, 2018.

Those who have not linked their Aadhaar number with their bank accounts and mobile SIM cards can now rest easy.
