In that gold medal game, for which fans back home will have to get up extremely early on Sunday morning, Germany have nothing to lose - or do they?

They sat anchored to their bench with heads slumped and when they did look up tears poured down their faces.

US triumphed 3-2 in a tense sudden death shoot-out to claim victory over their big rivals, their first Olympic success in 20 years.

"Ten players were with us in 2014", Team USA coach Robb Stauber said. Canadian men had previously never missed a final and won the last three Olympic curling titles while the women were atop the podium four years ago in Sochi.

"It's a little surreal right now still, just coming off of where we were to where we are now", USA vice skip Tyler George said after his team clinched a playoff spot. One's a dream and one's a reality.

"We shot ourselves in the foot in the beginning of the game and we weren't able to come back from it".

Canada fell 5-3 to the United States in Thursday's semifinal.

Through 14 days, 10 of Canada's best-ever 27 medals are gold.

"We always want more", USA team member John Landsteiner said about the championship game. And instead of trying to become the next Franz Beckenbauer, Michael Schumacher or Dirk Nowitzki, perhaps they'll want their parents to go out and buy them hockey equipment and enroll them in minor hockey so they can become the next Patrick Hager.

Sweden purposefully blanked the third end, and it paid off. Niklas Edin's team lied three stones all on a diagonal line just before the final stones. "We didn't. They were the better team", said Canada's Rob Klinkhammer.

"I don't play this (game) for medals", he said at the time.

"They came out ready to play". Sweden scored two in the first end, and another four in the third on the way to rolling to a 9-3 victory over Switzerland. "We played disciplined. We played our identity in terms of not giving up too much and making them work for everything", said Kelly.

With the King of Sweden and Ivanka Trump looking on - and bolstered by social media messages from actor Mr. T., National Football League quarterback Aaron Rodgers and speedskater Dan Jansen - Shuster skipped the Americans from a 2-4 record at the start of pool play to five wins in a row, starting with a victory over three-time defending Olympic champion Canada.

The contest got off to a tactical start with the Swedes blanking the first then scoring a pair in the second only to have the US hit right back with a two on another brilliant last-rock shot from Shuster. "We haven't played for a championship in a long time", Germany coach Marco Sturm said.

Norway is well ahead in the overall count with 37 medals total, 1o ahead of the second place country in that regard, Canada.

The Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation have been the best team in the tournament so far, but miracles have happened against the juggernaut before.

Now at the Olympics for the fourth time, Shuster clinched no worse than a silver medal with a second straight victory over Canada on Friday. It's even tougher when that team is a Canadian team that has won back-to-back-to-back Olympic gold medals and is the defending World Champions.
