Goggia tries to convince Vonn to continue

It's the second time Switzerland has placed two women on the podium of the Alpine combined event at the Winter Games.

And with that, Shiffrin let out a big laugh.

But on just the 13th gate, Vonn's worst nightmare came true - her ski clipped the gate and she was out.

The next-and final-Alpine skiing race is the team event, which is scheduled for Friday at 9 p.m. ET.

Alan Kidlow, father of Lindsey Vonn, gave some unique insight into the type of relationship he may have with his daughter after comments he made about her bronze medal win in the downhill. After she placed third during the Women's Downhill skiing event at the Pyeongchang games on February 20, she broke down in tears.

"I wish I could still continue on and tell you I'm going to race in four years and be a competitive threat, but unfortunately that's not the way it is", she said.

"I stayed calm [when watching Mowinckel]". "I really had no stress at all and could just chill and sleep because that was needed after that nice crash on my head".

Lindsey Vonn has taken aim at the "savage abuse" she has received on social medial, but insists she will "not be beaten" by internet trolls.

I think there's no question we're all proud of Lindsey's wonderful work, too.

She'd said she'd turn down a trip to the White House if she won Olympic gold.

Vonn did not compete in the 2014 Winter Games due to an injury.

Earlier in the evening, Vonn dominated the downhill portion of the ladies' alpine combined; her 1:39.37 time almost a full second better than her competitors.

She'll have a shot at one more medal Thursday in the women's combined. Glancing to Sofia Goggia, she wagged her finger in jest - part accepting that she had been vanquished by the faster woman, part understanding that her chance of the second downhill gold that could do justice to her great career had passed.

As Vonn's career winds down, the 33-year-old is favored to win a gold medal in the downhill Wednesday at the Jeongseon Alpine Center.

"For the first time during the Olympics, NBC beat the ratings for the corresponding night in Sochi four years ago", the AP reports.

Vonn finished in 1:39.69, .47 seconds behind Goggia, who is skiing in her first Olympics and was 11th in both the Super G and giant slalom.

In the meantime, there are other goals Vonn will pursue before retiring. "And I've had a lot of ups and downs - mostly downs - during that time", she said.

The disappointing finish by the three-time Olympian with a record 81 victories on the World Cup circuit unleashed a torrent of attacks on social media.

Speaking to BBC Sport, an emotional Vonn said she wanted to win "for my grandpa".

The star athlete chose to ski seventh in the lineup to ensure she raced after 25-year-old Goggia, her rival and friend. Vonn couldn't match it when she raced two spots later.

All of that will be put on hold for a bit, though.

Vonn in 60 seconds: 'I don't know. "I need a moment to breathe". Of course, I'm a competitor, and I always want to win, but you have to keep things in perspective.
