Report: 49ers hire pass rush specialist to coaching staff

Bruce Feldman of Sports Illustrated reported San Francisco signed Florida Atlantic defensive coordinator Chris Kiffin as a pass rush specialist coach. Kiffin is the younger brother of FAU coach Lane Kiffin. He's becoming a defensive assistant for the San Francisco 49ers.

As for Chris Kiffin, he's spent the majority of his career coaching in college.

In November, Kiffin was given a two-year "show cause" penalty by the NCAA as part of sanctions handed down for rules violations by Ole Miss, his previous employer.

Kiffin, 36, improved the Owls from the No. 124 defense to No. 37 in his one season there. The Owls will be without both coordinators, with offensive coordinator Kendal Briles taking the same job in Houston. Kiffin previously had been the defensive coordinator at Florida Atlantic University where his brother, Lane, who once coached the Raiders, is the head coach.

Lane Kiffin hired Charlie Weis Jr., the 24-year-old son of former Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis, as his new offensive coordinator amidst those departures.
