No. 1 Virginia tops Hurricanes 59-50

Virginia's home loss to rival Virginia Tech on Saturday didn't faze either the NCAA Men's Basketball Committee or media voters in the weekly Associated Press poll.

Over on the Miami side, they're sitting at 18-6 on the year. Virginia shut down the Hurricanes' transition game, and they managed only four fast-break points.

In overtime, although the Cavaliers had a 60-56 lead with 20.7 seconds to go, Virginia Tech nailed a three-pointer - bringing the game to a one-point difference.

But guard Davon Hall missed two of three free throws, including the first of a one-and-one, while the Hokies scored on their final three possessions for the 61-60 win. Isaiah Wilkins leads in rebounds with 6.6 while Jerome tops in assists with 3.7 per game.

Virginia's defense was able to hold Miami to 38 percent from the floor, and offensively, the Cavaliers assisted on 15 of their 22 field goals. "But that's what it would have been, stealing that game". I told our guys they've done an unbelievable job to get where they are... and we're going to get a chance to do it again, and we're going to have to fight like insane every game. A quick foul by Virginia Tech sent Hall to the free throw line, where he missed, allowing the Hokies to score the game-winning shot with 5.8 seconds remaining. "You can't do that if you're going to steal one".

"I don't get too carried away with where we are", Bennett said.

"Everybody is capable of beating everybody in this league, and that's reality", Bennett added. "If you are little off it is not enough". Xavier and Cincinnati round out the new AP top five. Different players had been stepping up to fill the void, even 6-foot-10 redshirt freshman backup forward Sam Waardenburg.

Miami coach Jim Larranaga is expected to return to the sideline after spending the BC game in the locker room with an apparent case of the flu. They have especially been challenged when the game has been in Coral Gables, Fla., as evidenced by their 1-7 record when visiting Miami. Virginia's only road win in the series was an 89-80 double overtime win on January 3, 2015.
