Last week, Maduro confirmed his attendance at the Summit of the Americas slated for April 13 and 14 last week after receiving the official invite from the Peruvian government. The group also urged Nicolás Maduro's administration to "reconsider" the call.

Venezuela abruptly set elections last week following a breakdown in official talks with opposition leaders to diffuse the country's bitter political fight, which led to bloody street protests previous year.

In a statement released after a meeting held over the weekend, the group also claimed that the election would be "illegitimate" if the process does not meet these requirements.

Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski says his Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolas Maduro, is "not welcome" at this year's Summit of the Americas in Lima, amid growing worldwide outcry over the decision to hold snap presidential elections amid a deepening economic and social crisis.

Venezuela's pro-government election officials recently announced that the presidential election will be April 22, though traditionally the vote has been held late in the year.

"If the USA puts an oil embargo on us, we will take our boat and go somewhere else", Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said.

Cuba denounces this pronouncement and the exclusion of Venezuela from the 8th Summit of the Americas are contrary to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Chart and the Proclamation of Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace, signed by the heads of State and Government of the member countries of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States. We are fully prepared to receive them.

Colombia's migration authority says the number of Venezuelans living in Colombia has skyrocketed in recent months, with an increase of 62 percent to 550,000 in just the last six months of 2017.

As the number of Venezuelans crossing the border increases, including unattended children who get free vaccinations and education, Colombia estimates it would need $30mn to build an assistance centre to give the migrants a temporary place to stay before deciding their next move.

The president said the embargo would be inconvenient both for the United States and Venezuela, and would be one of Trump's biggest political mistakes.

Colombia and Venezuela have a long history of diplomatic and territorial disputes.
