Lidl says the store has created 40 new jobs for the local community and boasts facilities such as an in-store bakery, longer-style tills with dual packing, customer toilets, baby changing and parking for both cars and bicycles.

Although the chain is dwarfed by Tesco and Sainsbury, whose stores number thousands, it and close rival Aldi are now third and fourth biggest in terms of number of United Kingdom stores.

Lidl plans to invest £1.45bn in the United Kingdom in 2017-18, including more than 50 new stores and regeneration of 30 existing stores in 2018.

The German group on Thursday said that its store count in Britain had now reached 700 with new outlets opening in Edinburgh, Stockton, Hull, Polegate and Rosehill, south London, this week. A total of 50 stores will open this year.

The discounter plans to open up 14 more by the end of February as the company continues to balloon.

Discounters such as Aldi and Lidl have shaken up the supermarket sector, putting huge competitive pressure on mainstream chains, including market leader Tesco and Sainsbury's. It has a 5 per cent share of spending in the grocery market and employs more than 22,000 people.

As a result, grocers have had to cut costs - and labour is one of their biggest costs.
