But one of the most widely welcomed moments of Kim Yo Jong's visit was when both she and the North's ceremonial head of state Kim Yong Nam stood as the South's flag was raised and anthem played at the Olympics opening ceremony in Pyeongchang.

Tensions between North and South Korea have cooled since the start of 2018.

The source said the trip would be "sometime after the Olympic Games", which are due to finish on February 25.

President Moon Jae-in is facing a dilemma over whether to accept North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's invitation to Pyongyang because he needs the blessing of the US that wants to apply "maximum pressure" on the isolated state. Pence told the press that there is "no daylight" between the USA and South Korea on North Korea.

"The point is, no pressure comes off until they are actually doing something that the alliance believes represents a meaningful step toward denuclearization", Pence told The Washington Post.

The world came down hard on North Korea with condemnation and sanctions not because we hate North Korea but because we want the regime to change its behaviour.

The combined Korean ice hockey team - the only such outfit in the current Winter Olympics - was formed just weeks before the Games with critics in South Korea saying the hasty move would lead to little success on the ice. North Korea has shown no signs it's willing to discuss denuclearization.

Moon only went so far as to say, "An early resumption of dialogue between the United States and the North is also needed for the development" of South-North relations. While Trump's advisers have threatened military action to prevent Kim from gaining the ability to strike the USA homeland with a nuclear weapon, Moon is seeking to prevent a war that could devastate South Korea and the region.

North Korea's delegation to the Winter Olympics returned to Pyongyang on Sunday, ending a three-day visit that amounted to a remarkable diplomatic breakthrough for the South Korean government but left big questions about whether it could lead to a solution to the decades-long military standoff between the two nations.

He didn't say what those conditions were, but he urged North Korea to open a dialogue with the United States, suggesting no diplomatic progress could be made without US participation.

If it takes place, the visit would be the first meeting of Korean leaders since Roh Moo-hyun visited Kim Jong-il in Pyongyang in October 2007 for a summit regarding nuclear issues. And given her high status in North Korea, she would also be an ideal person if the Unites States would like to reach out to North Korea.

North Korean media lauded the players and supporters of the unified Korean women's ice hockey team after their first match at the Olympics - without mentioning their 8-0 drubbing. But the reception served to underscore what appeared to be growing divisions between Washington and Seoul. They stressed the North Koreans in the VIP box had watched Pence, Moon and Abe hold a running discussion in the front row for the more than two-hour ceremonies. "Moon should be aware that he has to urge denuclearisation to North Korea by himself, not depending on dialogue between the U.S. and North Korea".

Pence and the North Korean delegation sat near each other at the ceremony but did not acknowledge or speak to each other.
